At my old library, our Christmas/holiday decorations included this rustic winter-themed wreath that we hung behind the circulation desk each year. The wreath itself wasn't all that bad, festooned in greenery and ribbon -- except for one little thing. The largest thing on this wreath was a deer head. A disembodied velveteen-covered-plastic ornament in the shape of a deer head.
Now, stuffed deer heads aren't really my thing in any case -- that sort of rustic decor doesn't do it for me -- but this particular little deer head always gave me the creeps. Each year someone would hang that wreath behind the circulation desk, and for the month or two it stayed up, every time I walked by it I could feel its beady little marble eyes following me as I moved past. I commented on this to my coworkers all the time, but the deer head apparently didn't really bother anyone but me.
Eventually, for reasons unrelated to that deer head, I left that job and moved on to greener pastures. I just celebrated my first anniversary at my new job -- a new job at which there are no creepy dead black eyes staring at me as I go about my work.
Anyway, the other day a package arrived for me. Beth had opened it by mistake, and she brought it back to my office. To say that she looked bemused would be an understatement. "I think you need to look at this," she said.
And what was in the box?
Yes. THE DEER HEAD. It was like The Godfather, right there in the tech services department! Amazingly enough, none of my former coworkers know a thing about this. Odd, don't you think?
At any rate, I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard! A week later, now, every time I think about it I still laugh out loud. And my current coworkers were all suitably amused/disturbed, too. ;-)
Jim suggested buying a small wooden plaque at a craft store and mounting the deer head to it. I think I may just have to do that! I'll have to think about where to put it, though -- after all, those eyes are STILL looking at me.
HA HA!! That is hysterical!! I think it needs a handknit scarf.

Oh, I like the scarf idea!
Sad how some people don't appreciate a good holiday dismemberment. . .

That is a spooky ornament. I think you should fix it to your car - it can be your new hood ornament!

I love it!
Is he big enough to prop up a book for a display? You could totally use him for the Book of the Week or something. ;-)

AAAHHHHH! It's a severed head! That is just so funny. You should get a wee wooden placque for it but hang it where it's dead eyes won't stare at you.
